State budget, education, murals, the Dunes and Crowd Sourcing... all in this edition of KCST's Our Town
KCST's Our Town covers a wide variety of topics in the February edition. Governor John Kitzhaber talked about how the state and the Governor's office have changed in the past eight years. Jeff Davis gave a 'mid-year' report on the activities at the Siuslaw School District. Davis, in his second year at the top of Siuslaw Schools says they're making progress on improving test scores, and involving parents in the educational process. Florence Community Director Sandra Belson, along with Sam Dantone of Treehouse Signs and Decorative Arts, talked about proposed new regulations for murals and public art in the community. The longest segment of the program featured District Ranger Pam Gardner with the Central Coast Ranger District and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area of the Siuslaw National Forest. She, and Dispersed Recreation Supervisor Sharon Stiles talked about the "Designated Routes" project the ODNRA is currently involved in. By the time it's complete, about 15% of the recreation area, all vegetated, will have restrictions as to where off-highway vehicles can drive. Open sand areas, as well as some vegetated areas won't face any restrictions. The program wrapped up with the monthly "Our Town Tech" segment featuring CU Innovators founder and owner Robbie Wright who talks about "crowd sourcing".
Segment one is a welcome and recap of the program by host Bob Sneddon
Governor John Kitzhaber was recently sworn in for an unprecedented third term as Oregon's Governor. That's after taking eight years off. Sneddon asked the Eugene native what happened to prompt him to return to public life.
Next up was Siuslaw School Superintendent Jeff Davis with a 'midyear' report on activities at local schools.
The City of Florence has been going through a revision of the sign code over the past several months. Part of that has entailed creating a new code section regulating murals. For several years, the city has regulated murals as part of the sign code, but now they're going to have their own set of rules. Florence Community Development Director Sandra Belson has been overseeing that process. She was joined by Sam Dantone of Treehouse Signs and Decorative Arts.
The longest segment of Our Town featured Central Coast Ranger Pam Gardner, along with Sharon Stewart, both with the U.S. Forest Service, talking about the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area. The agency recently completed the public portion of a rulemaking process called the "designated routes" project. The ODNRA has been operating for years under the principal that all areas are open for off-highway riding unless specifically closed to vehicles. A rules change on a national level means they must now identify specific areas that are both open and closed to riding. Most of the historical areas will remain open for riding, but portions going through vegetated areas will have specific routes posted. Gardner and Stewart talked about the dunes and the rules process.
Wrapping things up this program, owner and founder of CU Innovators, Robbie Wright talked about "Crowd Sourcing" in the Our Town Tech segment.
