December Our Town looks at LCC Florence and more.

The December edition of KCST's Our Town aired December First and covered a variety of topics.

The first guest of the day was Lucas Drysdale, who along with his wife Aurora operate Auriel, a teen advocacy and outreach agency. But Lucas wasn't talking about teens that day. He gave us an 8-minute summary on one of his passions... Tai Chi.

Moving on from the peace and tranquility of a Tai Chi session, we went back 69 years to December 7th, 1941. Americans knew there was a rumbling of war on the horizon, but it didn't erupt into fighting until that Sunday morning. We'll observe the 69th anniversary of that day on December 7th this year. Backers of the Oregon Coast Military Heritage talked about a preview of what some of their displays might look like. They, along with Three Rivers Casino and Hotel are hosting a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on Sunday, December 5th. Cal Applebee and Sam Spayd join program host Bob Sneddon

From there, we moved back into the present day and the Community Christmas Basket project.

One of the organizers, Carol Bennett, talked about fundraising and logistical efforts.

Coming up in February the Lane Memorial Blood Bank will be celebrating 50 years. They bring their blood mobile to Florence on the second Monday of even numbered months. Chelsie Wong, the Community Affairs Coordinator for LMBB talked about what they do with all stuff.

From there, we moved on to the primary focus of the show. Lane Community College has been serving the community since 1964. Shortly after establishing the school, they established an outreach "skill center" in Florence. Retiring Florence Center director Bob Purscelley gave a little background.

Joining us in the studio was Rachel Pearson, volunteer coordinator of the Florence portion of the college's "Opening Doors" campaign, an effort to raise $300,000 to help pay salaries, expenses and scholarships for health occupations training through LCC in Florence. Pearson and Purscelley spoke...

Lane Community College President Mary Spilde joined in the conversation to talk about Purscelley's retirement and the effort to find a replacement.

Wrapping up this month's program was the monthly feature "Our Town Tech" with the founder and owner of CU Innovators, Robbie Wright who talked about how technology has changed the way education is delivered in the classroom.

Next months' program airs live on KCST, FM 1069 on Wednesday, January 5th and will feature a preview of the upcoming 2011 Oregon Legislative Session.
